Safety First!
The most serious hazard for the runner is traffic.
For your safety you should:
- Pause at all stop signs; be careful at cross roads.
- Run on the shoulder where possible; otherwise, stay
as near the side of the road as is practical.
- In general, run on the left side of the road. At
a blind curve to the left and at the crest of hills
it may be safer to run on the right. Running tangents
can be very dangerous.
- Vehicles should always exercise great care when
approaching or passing runners. Never drive beside
a runner; park if you need to provide water.
- Vehicles should use flashers at all times.
- Do not drive against the flow of the runners on
narrow roads. Do not follow your runner on sections
when we have directed vans to take an alternative
route (ex.
Section 3).
At transitions:
- Runners waiting to take the baton must remain on
the left side of the road behind the exchange marker.
- Spectators and other team members must remain on
the right side of the road.
- The road must be kept clear for moving vehicles
and runners.
- Drivers of vehicles must yield the right of way
to runners.
